Multi zone WTMDs are designed to detect metal objects that pass through the metal detector without triggering the alarm. These detectors are usually installed in areas where there is a high level of theft or attempted theft. Multi zone detectors are also used in areas where there is a high level of metal objects such as jewelry, coins, etc. The multi zone detector sends out multiple signals to detect metal objects passing through it. However, this type of detector can be used for both single and multiple people at a time.

Single zone WTMDs are designed for one person only; they do not have any additional features like multi-zone detectors. Single zone detectors send out one signal at a time for each person passing through them which makes it difficult for people to walk through them without triggering the alarm which alerts security personnel or guards about someone attempting to steal something from the area in which they are trying to enter into undetected by security cameras or other sensors located within those areas
