Food processors are required to detect foreign objects. This is because inspection personnel face increased pressure to ensure food safety regulatory compliance and productivity. Food processors now have to respond quickly to changing demand for at-home meals. This includes frozen and processed foods that are shelf-stable.

Understanding and Identifying Contaminants

Metals like ferrous, nonferrous, and stainless-steel shavings, or pieces of equipment, are the most frequent foreign objects in food processing plants. Food processors are required to identify foreign objects that could be introduced into the food processing process as part of HACCP assessments. They also need to ensure that metal detectors are in place to prevent food product contamination.

Overcoming Detection Challenges

Metal detection has been used for years to find foreign metal objects in food. Metal detection has had its flaws until recently. Mineral-rich foods such as fresh salad greens or high-salt foods such as meat, cheese, and fresh-baked bread are highly conductive and can mimic metallic signals. Metal detectors are also vulnerable to environmental conditions such as temperature swings or electromagnetic interference from nearby equipment. It is also difficult to avoid false rejects which can lead to costly scrap and rework that could impact operational efficiency.

Bread is not the only subject of concern. Each loaf has its own physical characteristics, including air bubbles, densities and physical characteristics. Metal detectors can be confused by variations and think a contaminant exists, rejecting good products.
