An airplane X-ray Baggage Scanner Astrophysics Security and Screening system is used to scan objects that are too large to be screened using the traditional method of hand-screening. The scanner can also be used to screen inorganic objects, such as metal and ceramic, as well as organic objects such as clothing.

The type of scanner used depends on whether the object being scanned is inorganic or organic. For example, if an object being screened is a metallic object such as a knife or gun, then it needs to be scanned with a high resolution machine so that it can be identified as such by the scanner's dual energy X-ray source. If the object being screened is an organic substance such as clothing or food, then it would need to be screened using a low resolution machine so that it could be identified by the scanner's single energy X-ray source.

The security screening system uses two different types of radiation sources; one emits high energy X-rays while the other emits low energy X-rays. In order for these rays to interact with an object's atoms (or molecules), they need to have enough energy in order for them
