A backscatter scanner emits an electromagnetic field that passes through luggage and detects any foreign objects inside them. Backscatterers are not used at all airports in Europe but they are common in parts of Asia, Africa and South America.

Millimeter wave scanners use radio waves to scan luggage for contraband substances such as explosives or drugs. These are more expensive than other types of scanner but they can detect smaller amounts of material than other types of scanner.

Ion chamber scanners use electrostatic sensors which detect particles using their electric charge.
