The Small Size X-Ray Baggage Scanner (SSXB) can be used as a replacement for the traditional method of checking carry-on baggage with hand-held detectors. The SSXB uses high-energy X-rays to generate a detailed image of the object being scanned, which then allows its identity to be determined by computer software. This method is faster and more accurate than traditional hand-held detectors. However, it does require an initial high amount of radiation exposure to the operator's head and body in order to acquire an image that is then used by the computer software to determine whether the object being scanned contains an explosive substance or other harmful material.
