Metal detectors are a common sight in airports, train stations, hotels, casinos and other places where large groups of people gather. They are also used in schools to check for weapons and drugs. The first metal detector was invented by British engineer Edward Victor Appleton in 1879, but it was not until the 1990s that they became popular. Today there are many different types of metal detectors available on the market.

The most common type of metal detector is a piezoelectric scanner that uses electric current to detect any metal objects that may be concealed under clothing or carried on the person. These devices use radio frequency technology to send out pulses which bounce back from metallic objects and return them to their source where they can be detected by a receiver connected to the device. The amount of time required for the pulse to return from an object depends on its size and composition; larger items take longer to return than smaller ones because there is more air between them and the sensor's antennae (antenna).
